Home relocation is one of the most overwhelming tasks to go through in life. While there are those who have lived in the same house for ages, most of us have had to shift homes at some or the other point of time. Even a minimalist will have enough to pack and make a move thoughtfully. For the general homeowner, moving is a herculean process to be accomplished with all the sorting through years of memories and keepsakes. There are agencies that help relocate. These movers not only help pack, move and resettle, they may even offer services to find a suitable property and even help with interiors.
Organize: Avoid last moment rush. Create a careful list of how to sort through the items and list out what can be accomplished each day and each week prior to shifting.
Get rid of all unnecessary stuff: Needless to say, moving is a great opportunity to get rid of all those items you thought you would use later and has picked dust over time. You could donate clothes, hold a yard sale, send items for recycling, and furniture can be put up for sale.
Boxes: You can collect the right sized boxes from grocery stores that may already have them and reuse them. Choose smaller boxes as they are easier to carry around, especially upstairs and narrow spaces.
Label everything: Once the items are packed, label all items appropriately on the sides, especially the direction in which it must place. Also, mention if fragile. It would be wise to number the boxes and keep a list of items of the content within the box. This list will help you retrieve any essential items that you might need unexpectedly.
Keep valuables safe: Get all your valuables insured if you are hiring a moving company. Find a safe place to keep your valuables. If there is a computer that is being moved create backup files just to be prepared for the worst.
Develop a move strategy: If you are moving with the help of friends or family it would be best to organize how it will be accomplished. Rent a truck early itself for the move. Give directions to those helping you so that they know exactly what they are required to do. If you are hiring a moving agency, most of your problems are taken care of, but you still need to be the one in control.
Determine that which requires special packaging: Electronic items and breakables need to be packed with extra care. The slightest faults in packing may result in great loss. Convey to the hired company your special requirements and also mention any heavy items that need to be packed and moved. Also, mention any items that may need to be taken apart and reassembled.
Transportation: If you are moving over a short distance, you can afford a small truck and make more than one trip to move your assets, but if you are moving over a long distance, you will require a larger vehicle such that all your items can go in one go.
